Weight and Spine Health

At Specialized Physical Therapy STL, we know your spine is doing more than just holding you upright. Your spine helps protect your nervous system, supports your body, and allows you to move throughout your everyday life. What many people don’t realize is how much your body weight, along with additional weight you carry or lift, can affect the amount of stress placed on your spine. The amount of force placed on your spine can change depending on your posture, activity, and the position of your body. Over time, consistently placing additional stress on the spine may contribute to discomfort, reduced mobility, and other musculoskeletal problems.

Extra weight, particularly around the midsection, can also change your center of gravity. This may cause your body to adjust how you stand, walk, and move, potentially increasing the workload placed on the muscles and joints around your lower back. Conditions such as chronic low back pain and osteoarthritis can be influenced by a combination of factors, including body weight, activity level, movement patterns, and previous injuries. This doesn’t mean that weight alone causes back pain, but maintaining a healthy weight can be one part of supporting your overall musculoskeletal health.

The amount of force placed on your spine can also increase during everyday activities. For example, lifting an object while bending forward can place substantially more load on the lower back because of leverage and the activation of the surrounding muscles. Sitting can also change the amount of pressure placed on the spine, particularly when sitting for long periods or using poor posture. This is one reason why taking regular movement breaks, practicing proper lifting mechanics, and maintaining good posture can be helpful for your spine.

The good news is that you don’t have to make drastic changes to support your spine. Balanced nutrition, regular physical activity, strength training, mobility exercises, and maintaining a healthy body weight can all contribute to better overall function. Even small improvements in strength and movement can make everyday activities feel easier and more comfortable.

At Specialized Physical Therapy STL, we can help you develop a personalized plan based on your individual needs and goals. Our team can evaluate your movement, strength, mobility, and other factors that may be contributing to your discomfort. Whether you’re trying to manage existing back pain, improve your movement, or become more active, physical therapy can help you build the strength and confidence you need to move better, feel better, and get back to living the life you enjoy.
