Diastasis Recti

Diastasis Recti is a condition where the connective tissue along the middle line of the abdominal muscles becomes stretched and widened, creating a separation between the two sides of the abdominal wall. It is especially common during and after pregnancy because the growing baby places additional pressure on the abdominal wall. However, diastasis recti can happen to both men and women and is not limited to pregnancy. Increased abdominal pressure from things such as chronic coughing, significant weight gain, obesity, improper lifting techniques, or certain exercise movements can also contribute to increased stress on the abdominal wall.

Some people with diastasis recti may notice a visible bulge or doming along the middle of the abdomen, particularly when sitting up, lifting, or performing certain core exercises. Other symptoms can include feelings of weakness through the core, difficulty with certain movements, changes in posture, or discomfort in the abdomen or lower back. Not everyone experiences the same symptoms, which is why a proper evaluation can help determine what is happening and what type of treatment may be appropriate.

Here at Specialized Physical Therapy, we can help address the weakness and movement changes associated with diastasis recti. Our approach may include deep abdominal and core strengthening, breathing techniques, manual therapy, posture and movement training, and progressive exercises based on your individual needs. Learning how to properly engage your core and manage pressure within your abdomen can be an important part of improving how your abdominal muscles work together. Rather than immediately jumping into intense abdominal exercises, we can help you gradually build strength and control in a way that supports your recovery.

Diastasis recti does not mean that you have to stop being active or avoid exercise altogether. With the right guidance, you can gradually work toward improving your core strength and returning to the activities you enjoy. Treatment will look different for everyone depending on the severity of the condition, your symptoms, your activity level, and your individual goals.

If you’re experiencing abdominal weakness, changes in the appearance of your abdomen, discomfort, or difficulty with certain movements, Specialized Physical Therapy can help. Our team can evaluate your symptoms and create a progressive treatment plan designed around your needs. Schedule your consultation with Specialized Physical Therapy today and take the next step toward getting stronger, moving better, and getting back to doing what you love!
