Postural Taping

Postural taping is a rehabilitation tool that can help assist with improving posture and increasing awareness of how your body is positioned throughout the day. The process involves applying athletic tape to specific areas of the body, including muscles and joints, to help encourage better postural awareness and movement control. Instead of forcing your body into a specific position, the tape provides a gentle reminder that can help you become more aware of when you are moving out of your desired posture.

One of the ways postural taping works is through the sensation of the tape on your skin. When you begin to slouch or move out of position, the tape can create a gentle pulling or tension sensation on the skin. This doesn’t physically force your body back into position. Instead, it gives your brain a physical reminder that you have changed positions, allowing you to become more aware of your posture. Over time, this increased awareness can help you better recognize how your body feels when you are sitting, standing, or moving with improved posture.

Postural taping may be incorporated into physical therapy for people who experience forward head positioning, rounded shoulders, muscle tension, or discomfort related to poor movement patterns. Improving postural awareness may help reduce unnecessary strain placed on muscles that are working harder than they need to. It may also be used alongside exercises designed to strengthen weak areas, improve mobility, and develop better movement patterns. Taping itself is not meant to be a permanent solution, but rather a tool that can work alongside other physical therapy techniques to help you become more aware of your body.

Your physical therapist can determine where and how the tape should be applied based on your individual needs and goals. Everyone’s posture and movement patterns are different, so a personalized approach is important when addressing posture-related concerns. Postural taping may be especially helpful when combined with strengthening exercises, stretching, mobility work, and movement training.
